When Suzy McCalley is in Brazil, many people see
her as a “gringo,” or a non-Hispanic or Latino person.
But when she’s back in the US, she feels differently.

“I feel very Brazilian sometimes,” says McCalley on a
video call from her family’s home just outside of
Rio de Janeiro. “My identity is multilayered.
Sometimes I get that feeling of,
Where do I really belong? Where is home?”
